One of Roald Dahl’s last publications before his death in 1990, Matilda was published in 1988 and tells the story of an extraordinary child with incredibly harsh parents. After defeating the mean giants together Sophie and the BFG live happily next door to each other in London! The plot focuses on a young orphan girl named Sophie who is whisked away to Giant Country by the BFG! She soon realises that, despite his size, the BFG isn’t there to harm her and instead his job is to deliver nice dreams to children and protect them from the mean giants. Loved by all, The BFG or Big Friendly Giant was published in 1982 and to this day it is still captures the imagination of children of all ages. Like many of his books, Mr Fox was adapted for film by director Wes Anderson in 2009. But the farmers want revenge and are out to get the sneaky fox! The plot focuses on a tricky, clever fox named Mr Fox and focuses on how he outwits farmers to steal food for his family. Published in 1970 Fantastic Fox was another Roald Dahl classic. The five lucky winners, unknown to them, are competing to takeover the factory as Wonka seeks to find an heir and it is Charlie who strikes lucky.
Charlie, despite all the odds, gets his hands on a Golden Ticket, which grants him access into Willy Wonka’s factory. The story focuses on a poor young boy, Charlie Bucket, who is fascinated by the local chocolate factory owned by famous chocolatier Willy Wonka. Another massive success, it has sold over 13 million copies worldwide and has been adapted for both film and stage performance. Three years later and Dahl was at it again, this time releasing the classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Since its publication James and the Giant Peach has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide, translated into 34 languages and, like the Peach, its popularity continues to grow! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory In 1996, after numerous offers had been declined by Dahl, a film adaption of the children’s classic was created after his widow, Liccy Dahl, approved an offer from Disney. The story focuses on an English orphan boy who experiences a surreal, cross-world adventure in a gigantic, magical peach meeting a number of magical garden bugs along the way.
